Art Curriculum Intent
Our rationale behind our Art and Design curriculum aims to ensure that pupils develop a love for art through a range of creative activities. The coverage within our curriculum encompasses a variety of enrichment stimuli to engage pupils’ interests in artists and a variety of art forms, media and techniques.
Across the Federation all year groups develop and embed skills in becoming proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
Through our creative curriculum:
- Pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of current, historical, architectural and cultural art forms through observations that children partake in, making links to artists with their own creative art work.
- Through the evaluation and analysis of the artists they improve their mastery of art and design techniques.
Within each key stage pupils are taught to cultivate a range of art and design techniques in colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form, space and control. Whilst comparing the similarities and difference of various practices and disciplines, and making links with their own work.
Music Curriculum Intent
Our rationale behind our Music curriculum is to ensure all children develop a love of music and any talents they have as musicians.
- It gives them a chance to express themselves through music, regardless of their ability or background.
- Pupils compose and perform using a range of instruments, including their voices, that increase self-confidence and develop a sense of achievement.
To enrich this, we bring into school musical experts from Derbyshire Music Partnership
- Y3 ukelele;
- Y5 Steel pans;
- Singing Stars for Year 1 and Year 2;
- Our musician in residence (Y1 – Y6).
These experts work with the whole class, as well as specific individuals, to nurture that talent and give children the opportunity to perform in front of an audience.
To inspire children, we invite singers and musicians to perform and talk about their influences and journey, as well as taking the children to watch musicals.
The statutory requirements are covered sequentially, with all children being taught to play an instrument (Y3 and Y5). All objectives are covered twice to ensure the children are able to recall and apply their skills in a range of instruments and compositions. They develop their knowledge of different composers and the different eras of musical history.
