SEND Frequently Asked Questions
How do I raise a concern about my child's learning or development?
If you have concerns about your child's progress, learning, communication, behaviour or emotional wellbeing, please speak to your child's class teacher in the first instance. Teachers know your child best on a day-to-day basis and can discuss any concerns with you.
If concerns remain, the teacher may involve the SENDCo, and together we will consider whether additional support is needed. We believe that parents and carers are key partners in their child's education and value your views and observations.
What is SEND Support?
SEN Support is the additional help provided to children who require support that is different from or additional to that normally available through high-quality classroom teaching.
Support may include:
- Small group interventions
- Additional adult support
- Adapted resources
- Social and emotional support
- Speech and language activities
- Specific learning programmes
The support provided will always be based on your child's individual needs and reviewed regularly
What is an Education, Health and Care Plan?
An EHCP is a legal document for children and young people whose needs cannot be met through the resources normally available within school.
An EHCP:
- Identifies a child's special educational needs
- Describes the support required
- Sets outcomes for the child
- Brings together education, health and social care services
Schools may request an Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment where evidence shows a child requires a significantly higher level of support than that ordinarily available. Decisions regarding assessments are made by Derbyshire County Council.
The Federation currently supports pupils with EHCPs across both schools.
How will I know if my child is making progress?
We regularly review the progress of all pupils through:
- Teacher assessment
- Pupil progress meetings
- Intervention reviews
- Parent consultations
- SEND review meetings
Progress is not only measured through academic achievement. We also look at improvements in:
- Confidence
- Independence
- Attendance
- Social skills
- Communication
- Emotional wellbeing
Parents and carers will be kept informed about the support provided and the progress their child is making.
How are parents involved in decisions about support?
We believe children achieve the best outcomes when families and school work together.
Parents are involved through:
- Regular communication with teachers
- SEND review meetings
- Annual EHCP reviews
- Parent consultation evenings
- Discussions about targets and support plans
Your views and aspirations for your child are central to any decisions that are made
What specialist services work with the School?
Where appropriate, we work with a range of specialist services, including:
- Educational Psychologists
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Specialist Teachers
- School Nursing Services
- Health Professionals
- Local Authority SEND Services
Referrals are discussed with parents and carers and made where additional specialist advice is required.
How does the school identify children who may have SEND?
We continually monitor the progress and wellbeing of all pupils through assessment, observation, discussions with parents and regular pupil progress meetings.
Some children may be identified as needing additional support because they are:
- Making less progress than expected
- Experiencing difficulties with communication or language
- Finding it difficult to access learning
- Showing social, emotional or behavioural concerns
- Receiving advice from external professionals
When concerns are identified, we follow the graduated approach outlined in the SEND Code of Practice: Assess, Plan, Do, Review
What should I do if I am unhappy about my child's SEND provision?
We encourage parents to speak with the class teacher or SENDCo as soon as concerns arise so that issues can be resolved quickly and collaboratively.
If concerns remain, parents may follow the school's Complaints Procedure, which is available on the school website.
We are committed to working positively with families and finding solutions together.
