History Curriculum Intent
Our History curriculum is designed to inspire a curiosity to know more about the past. Our rationale is to have the children experience the following objectives to make sure their learning in history inspires the live long love of learning by:
- Knowing and understanding significant aspects of the history of Britain and the wider world including people, events and changes.
- Knowing how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world.
- Putting events, people, objects and changes in chronological order. To know their own place in time.
- Knowing how and why things have changed over time, understanding that actions have consequences.
- Knowing how different types of evidence are used to draw conclusions about the past and how evidence can be interpreted in different ways.
- learning about local history, investigating significant people, events and changes in our local area over time.
- Experiencing and exploring a wide range of secondary sources including stories, eye-witness accounts, pictures, photographs, artefacts and historic buildings.
In order to inspire children to be curious and know more about the past, we provide clear enrichment opportunities:
- visits to museums,
- visits to local historical sites
- welcoming visitors into school.
- New technology that school has invested in, such as Now Press Play, has allowed children to immerse themselves into a part of history, which creates a vivid image and base for enquiry.
The ‘’Curriculum on a Page’’ and ‘’Schemes of Work’’ documents match the National Curriculum. Connections and progression are clear through chronologically learning about earlier periods through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
- Year 5 cover local history with a specific focus on how this area was affected by events, development or recent changes as well as beyond their own living memory.
- Year 6 study World War II with a view to prepare them for Key Stage 3 requirements. In Year 6 there is a focus on developing a richer vocabulary and deeper understanding of why events take place.
- Key Stage 1 look at significant individuals from history and why they are significant too.
Geography Curriculum Intent
As a team we have investigated our Geography content, across the Federation. Our curriculum on a page is planned to ensure the coverage is complying with the National Curriculum.
- This curriculum is planned to inspire children to become curious and fascinated about the world and its people, as well as exploring the world beyond their own community.
- They will learn about the different countries of the world, know what is special about them and know how they are similar to and different from each other.
- They will understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, including how landscapes are formed and changed.
- Fieldwork is a big part of our work and developing the skills needed to explore the local area. This will involve collecting, analysing, interpreting and communicating our findings from the fieldwork in a variety of ways.
- Part of our work is also looking at the impact on the local environment and recognising ways that we can improve it.
